Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the still fragile German democracy. The radicalized children of the Nazi generation are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism. Their aim is to create a more human society, but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity.

"Images of the Berlin Wall“ and “Freedom Rocks". Ongoing at the Consulate General of Germany in Toronto until November 27, 2009

The story of the Berlin Wall 20 Years after its Fall. Two Exhibitions.

Ryerson University, the Consulate General of Germany in Toronto, and the Embassy of Canada in Berlin jointly present “Images of the Berlin Wall” and “Freedom Rocks” for public viewing at the Consulate General of Germany in Toronto between October 1 and November 27, 2009 .

Twenty years after its fall, the symbolic weight of the Berlin Wall continues to accompany us as an historical monument to war, politics and painful cultural divisions. In ‘Images of the Berlin Wall” Ryerson University remounts the dynamic and moving story of the Wall through a selection of iconic photojournalistic prints from its renowned Black Star Collection. These black and white documents of history are juxtaposed with the contemporary art project, “Freedom Rocks” by Toronto artists Blake Fitzpatrick and Vid Ingelevics. Their photographs and videos reveal the transformed material existence of the Wall in the slabs and fragments that are today scattered throughout the world.

Germany celebrates

Germany is celebrating two major anniversaries in 2009: 60 years ago, the promulgation of the Basic Law represented the birth of the Federal Republic of Germany. 20 years ago, in November 1989, the Berlin Wall came down. These historical turning points mark a period spanning from the economic miracle in post-war Germany to the end of the Cold War in 1989.  Cities from Berlin to Leipzig and the regions along the former inner-German border are hosting special festivals, exhibitions and events. Berlin is the centre of celebrations in 2009. Residents and visitors to the city will commemorate the events of 1989 and the subsequent reunification in 1990 with an extensive cultural program, including an open-air exhibition on Alexanderplatz from May 7 to November 9. Follow the trail of the Berlin Wall or go on a Trabi Safari!
